Geneva has long been one of the world’s capitals of international law and the headquarters of international institutions dedicated to human rights. This inspiring context naturally has led to one of the core strengths of the University of Geneva to be within the domain of international human rights laws and policies.

The Summer School ‘Children at the Heart of Human Rights’ is a unique opportunity for students and young professionals to engage with leading experts in a dynamic scientific interdisciplinary environment. It is the perfect academic and professional preparation experience for those students interested in children’s rights and international human rights organizations.

The course is shaped to bring out the best of current issues in the international debate on children’s rights studies and policies. It will examine these issues with an interdisciplinary perspective and investigate different international legal instruments such as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and other human rights treaties and standard-setting instruments. This programme is characterized by a deep dive into the following:
• the interplay between theory and practice in the field of children's rights
• the international perspective promoted by the lecturers from different regions of the world
• field visits to several UN Agencies, international humanitarian organisations and NGOs, located in Geneva

The blending of all these features will favour a vibrant, challenging and fruitful interactive learning atmosphere.

The objective of the Human Rights Law Centre Summer School is to consider issues concerning the rights of the child that are a matter of current legal, political and societal attention, both internationally and comparatively. These include child participation, child poverty, children in conflict, and child rights monitoring and advocacy.

The Summer School will examine international and regional child rights law, including the work of the international courts and treaty monitoring bodies mandated to consider violations of the rights of the child.

Training seminar 'The Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union in Practice'

This seminar organized by ERA will provide practical training on the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights for lawyers specialising in civil law and other legal professionals.

Participants will be able to deepen and update their knowledge about the Charter of Fundamental Rights, in particular as applied to civil law. They will have the opportunity to discuss with colleagues and experts from across Europe the most relevant practical issues and recent developments in the field and to learn how to make use of the Charter in a case before a court.

Expert Workshop on International Human Rights Systems

A two-day closed expert workshop entitled “Moving Beyond the Good, the Bad and the Ugly: What to Learn From International Human Rights Systems?“, organised by Prof. Yves Haeck and Dr. Clara Burbano-Herrera (Faculty of Law, 29-30 January 2016), will look at international human rights systems from a critical perspective and examine which of their practices have contributed towards ensuring genuine respect for human rights.

During this event, which will be opened by the Dean of the Law Faculty, Prof. Tison, renowned scholars, practitioners, including judges, from Europe, the Americas and Africa, will assess what good practices, strategies and actions to address violations of human rights can be copied from other jurisdictions, and which practices do not deserve to be repeated or replicated. They will discuss opportunities for improving policies and outcomes through the implementation of decisions of international human rights organs and the use of rights, and address the dilemmas in the context of violence, discrimination, exclusion, inequality and economic constraints.

In addition, the most recent publication of Dr. Burbano Herrera and Prof. Dr. Haeck, edited together with Mr. Ruiz-Chiriboga, The Inter-American Court of Human Rights: Theory and Practice, Present and Future (Cambridge, Intersentia, 2015, 832 p) will be presented by Prof. Leo Zwaak (Utrecht University and American University). Drawing on the case law of the Court, this volume analyses crucial developments over the years on both procedural and substantive issues before the Inter-American Court, as well as its relationships with other international human rights adjudicators.

PICUM, the Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants, is a network of individuals and organisations working to ensure social justice and human rights for undocumented migrants. Grounded in principles of social justice, anti-racism and equality, PICUM works to ensure that all migrants are entitled to a dignified standard of living and respect. Bringing together the experiences and expertise of its members, PICUM generates and coordinates a humane and informed response to undocumented migrants’ realities and provides a platform to engage policy makers and the general public in the full realisation of their rights.

Based in Brussels, the PICUM secretariat leads the network’s advocacy, awareness raising, and research activities. Unlike its members working on the frontline, PICUM’s secretariat does not provide direct assistance to undocumented migrants but works to build a strong civil society network to support each other and challenge discriminatory policies and practices.

PICUM is looking for a trainee for the period from 1 March 2016 - 31 August 2016. The candidate will play an important role in PICUM’s daily work, mainly assisting with administrative tasks, event organisation and membership related activities. The work experience will provide an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the different facets of operating a transnational NGO network, and promoting social and policy change in the area of human rights for undocumented migrants.

Recent Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights in Family Law Matters

This seminar will provide participants with a detailed understanding of the most recent jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) related to family law matters.

The spotlight is centred on Article 8 (respect for private and family life) in conjunction with Article 14 (prohibition of discrimination) and Article 12 (right to marry). The case law of the ECtHR concentrates not only on the legal implications but also on social, emotional and biological factors.
