Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amsterdam
Development/Outreach Intern: November/December 2015 - May/June 2016
The Amsterdam office of Human Rights Watch, which opened in 2010, is currently seeking an intern with an interest in human rights, development (fundraising) and event planning. The intern will learn how to organize outreach and cultivation events, prepare visits for international HRW researchers and advocates, correspond with donors and partner organizations, and research human rights issues in the Netherlands.
This internship is best suited for those individuals interested in gaining experience within a small office of a large, well-organized, international non-profit organization. Interns will build fundraising, event management, and information tracking skills and gain knowledge of the organization's priority human rights issues.
This internship is unpaid. Interns may be reimbursed for their lunch and local travel costs as pre-approved by HRW and in accordance with HRW policy. Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.
Applicants should be exceptionally well-organized, self-motivated, and reliable with a strong interest in international human rights as well as event planning. Teamwork and organizational skills are highly desired. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Dutch are required. Ideally, interns are asked to commit for a period of six months (32 hours per week, four days a week) starting in November or December 2015.
