Fair Trials is a human rights organisation that works to improve respect for the fundamental human right to a fair trial. Fair Trials currently has a vacancy for a Legal and Policy Intern.
Purpose of role
• To assist the Legal and Policy Officers and the Legal and Policy Director in the development and delivery of Fair Trials' legal and policy work.
• To assist the Legal and Policy Officers and the Legal and Policy Director in all aspects of the development and delivery of Fair Trials' network activities, including expert meetings and trainings.
• To assist in the delivery of information and referrals to members of the public who contact Fair Trials to ask for help.

Responsibilities
• Legal and policy research on UK, comparative and international law.
• Monitoring of relevant activities within EU legislative bodies, regional and international courts.
• Assisting with the drafting of policy submissions, case work and campaigning materials.
• Maintaining data on Fair Trials' key policy contacts and network members.
• Assisting with the drafting of case summaries and other content for Fair Trials' website.
• Assisting with the drafting and coordination of Fair Trials publications including campaign materials.
• Assisting the Law Reform team with coordinating Fair Trials' capacity building and networking activities. Tasks to include but not limited to:
  • Researching prospective attendees and venues.
  • Preparing background materials on local and international law.
  • Advertising events and sending out invitations.
  • Managing the distribution of papers and minutes.
  • Assisting the law reform team in preparing meeting minutes and final communiqués following each expert meeting.
• In all other respects, complying with Fair Trials' Grant Agreements with the European Commission and observing the requirements of these Agreements in relation to the conduct of the network events and the keeping of records relating to them. 
• Assisting the Legal and Policy team in the delivery of information and referrals to individuals seeking help. Tasks to include but not limited to:
  • Sending out initial correspondence to individuals who contact Fair Trials to seek help.
  • Entering and maintaining accurate information about cases and contacts in databases and archives.
  • Drafting responses to individuals who contact Fair Trials for help with information and referrals.
  • Carrying out legal research relevant to specific queries.
  • Summarising cases, and identifying fair trial issues raised by individuals requesting assistance.
Person specification
• Must have completed a law degree or law conversion course. 
• Demonstrates an interest in human rights law, criminal law and the rule of law.
• Highly organised and able to prioritise a workload.
• A willingness to be flexible according to the demands of the organisation.
• Capable legal researcher.
• Excellent communications skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage own time.
• Ability to summarise cases and present them in clear and compelling language.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office and good general office skills.
• Experience of events organisation desirable.
• European languages desirable.

Salary and conditions
This post is an unpaid position. The successful candidate will be reimbursed travel costs to the Fair Trial offices in London (from within London). A per diem of £5 per day will also be provided for lunch. Candidates should be available for a minimum of 3 months, from 11 April 2016.

The selection process
We will aim to notify all candidates that have been shortlisted for interview as soon as possible after the deadline. Please note we will unfortunately be unable to supply feedback to candidates who have not been shortlisted. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be held at the Fair Trials offices in central London during week commencing 28 March 2016.
