Summer School 2016 - Integration/Disintegration

​Since 1999, the Institute for Minority Rights at the European Academy Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC) has been organizing a two-week Summer School on the topics of Human Rights, Minorities and Diversity Management. The international Summer School attracts students from all over the world, offering them a platform to discuss current topics in the field of diversity management with experts from inside and outside of academia.

In 2016, the 30-35 participants of the Summer School will explore the theme of Integration/Disintegration through seminars and workshops focusing on a wide range of topics, from minority rights, migrant integration and right-wing extremism to direct democracy and the right to self-determination. Encounters with South Tyrolean politicians and a visit to a primary school in Switzerland will provide opportunities to experience local approaches to minority protection and diversity governance.
Who should participate?  
• MA and PhD students interested in minority rights, migration and migrant integration, diversity governance
• Lawyers, economists, political and social scientists and others working in non-governmental organizations
• Civil servants from local, regional or national administrations who primarily deal with minority and diversity related issues and therefore require both theoretical and practical training on those issues;
• Journalists and teachers interested in recent developments, current theories and advanced training on issues concerning minorities and diversity.  


Tuition fee
€400 (lunch and transport from Bozen/Bolzano to Switzerland included). Accommodation, travel costs and other expenses are not covered by the tuition fee. Budget accommodation is available at the Youth Hostel of Bozen/Bolzano (€25/night, breakfast included). 

5 scholarships covering accommodation at the Youth Hostel in Bozen/Bolzano and in Switzerland and a reduced tuition fee of €150 are available. Selection is based on merit and need.

Location 
The Summer School takes place in the city of Bozen/ Bolzano (South Tyrol, Italy). Bozen/ Bolzano is inhabited by a German-speaking minority, a majority population of Italian speakers, and a third group of migrants and immigrants constituting 13% of the city’s population. 

From 24-26 June, the Summer School is hosted by the Foundation Convivenza in the Canton of Grisons / Graubünden (Switzerland, exact location to be decided). A free shuttle from Bozen/Bolzano to Switzerland will be provided.

Diploma, credits and publishing opportunities
Participants may choose to write an essay after the Summer School to obtain 5 ECTS points (from University of Graz). The best essays may be published in the European Diversity and Autonomy Papers. 

Organizers 
This year’s Summer School is organized by the Institute for Minority Rights of the European Academy Bozen/Bolzano (EURAC) in co-operation with the Swiss foundation Convivenza, Middlesex University, School of Law, London and the University of Graz, Austria.
