ChildPact Summer Research Scholarship Programme 2014

ChildPact, the Regional Coalition for Child Protection in the Wider Black Sea Area is a non-governmental coalition that represents more than 600 NGOs working with 500.000 vulnerable children across Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Bosnia Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Romania, the Republic of Moldova and Serbia.

ChildPact wants to support academic research that can inform policy makers and put into practice  efforts to protect and care for vulnerable children. Therefore ChildPact offers scholarships for summer research initiatives that contribute to quantitative and qualitative data and analysis on one of the following issues: child labour, children left behind to migrating parents, children with disabilities and institutionalization. It supports highly motivated and qualified graduate students who want to understand, test and shape child protection reform today and in the future.

The ChildPact summer research scholarship programme provides a one-time scholarship of 1.000 EUROS  to develop and implement a field-level research initiative in any ChildPact country (Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Romania, or Serbia). Chosen ChildPact Scholars will be paired with a ChildPact-affiliated host NGO for field-level access and networking purposes to facilitate research implementation.

In the contemporary world the coexistence and interaction of legal regimes has become a characteristic feature. The same holds true for the human rights systems that have developed nationally, regionally and globally.

In many cases where human rights are at risk, different human rights protection mechanisms may be applicable or overlap. In addition, human rights supervisory bodies seem increasingly inclined to take each other’s work into account, aiming to enhance the building of an all-embracing and cohesive human rights culture. The Advanced Master’s in ‘European and International Human Rights Law’ at Universiteit Leiden gives the coexistence and interaction of multiple human rights mechanisms pride of place by studying them in a comparative perspective.

This Master of Laws Advanced Studies programme is a focused and demanding postgraduate degree programme. It is directed at law graduates and other graduates with a sufficient background in law who are eager to pursue advanced studies in order to specialise in international and European human rights law.

Parliamentarians for Global Action is recruiting one intern for its Hague-based office.

The internship will begin in March 2014 and will last minimum 3 and maximum 4 months. The internship comprises 30-35 hours of work per week. Due to lack of funds, this internship is unpaid.

The Venice Academy of Human Rights is an international programme of excellence for human rights education, research and debate. It forms part of the European Inter-University Centre for Human Rights and Democratisation (EIUC).

The Academy offers interdisciplinary thematic programmes open to academics, practitioners, doctoral and master students with an advanced knowledge of human rights. Participants attend morning lectures, participate in discussion sessions and workshops and can exchange views, ideas and arguments with leading international scholars and experts.
This includes the opportunity for a number of participants to present and discuss their own 'work in progress' such as drafts of articles, chapters of books or doctoral theses and receive comments from faculty members (including P. Alston, A. Føllesdal, G. Ulfstein and J. Waldron) and peers.

The theme of this year’s academy is ‘Judicial Legitimacy and the Rule of Law’.

At the end of the programme, participants receive a Certificate of Attendance issued by the Venice Academy of Human Rights.

The third edition of the Tilburg University Statelessness Summer Course aims to consider statelessness and the right to nationality from various angles. It will deal with legal and policy issues associated with statelessness. The status of stateless persons, their human rights and international protection will be addressed, as well as ways to research and document statelessness. The course will draw on experiences from many places around the world. In addition, it will take a closer look at a number of specific questions relating to statelessness, such as UNHCR's mandate and work, gender discrimination, and the litigation of the right to a nationality.

Profile of the Centre
The Centre is designed to bring together young international lawyers of a high standard from all over the world, to undertake original research on a common general theme which is determined each year by the Academy. The research work undertaken at the Centre may be included in a collective work published by the Academy.

There are between 20 and 24 participants, half in the English-speaking section and half in the French-speaking section.

 

The topic of the 2014 Centre is 'The Rights of Women and Elimination of Discrimination'.

The topic is broad in order to bring together scholars specialising in either Public International Law or Private International Law, or both. The aim is to cover both theoretical and practical aspects, with regard to a variety of situations and contexts. Considering that the contributions are to be published later on in the form of a Centre book, the candidates are expected to be able to write fluently in either French or English.

Human Rights Documentary Film Festival

One World is one of the cornerstones of the People in Need organisation. Since its inception in 1999, it has become the most important festival of its kind in Europe and in 2007 it won a special mention from UNESCO for its contribution to human rights education.

 

About People in Need

 

People in Need was established in 1992 by a group of war correspondents and foreign correspondents who were no longer satisfied with simply bringing back information to the Czech Republic and therefore began sending out aid. People in Need has gradually established itself as a humanitarian organisation that aims to help in troubled regions and to support the observance of human rights around the world.

 

About the festival

 

This year’s festival will bring 15 films from different parts of the world. Film screenings, followed by discussions with filmmakers, NGO leaders, activists and EU experts will take place at the Permanent Representation of the Czech Republic to the EU, the European Parlament, the Goethe Institute and the Mission of Norway to the EU.

The festival kicks-off on Monday 24 March, 8 PM on the premises of BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts in Brussels with the screening of 'Putin’s Games'.

Distance Learning Course: International Human Rights Law

This course is designed to give an in-depth understanding of international human rights standards and of the UN and regional systems that implement them. It has both theoretical and practical dimensions, with an emphasis upon current issues.

The course is taught by leading human rights academics and practitioners in the international human rights systems. The academic director, Professor Emeritus David Harris, is a former Member of the European Committee of Social Rights and author of books on European and Inter-American human rights law.

The course is aimed at those for whom knowledge of the increasingly important subject of international human rights law is of value in their work, or who wish to embark upon a career in human rights. It is particularly intended for those who cannot find the time to take a full-time course, such as the 10 week course that the Centre offers.
