Background
The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is a health-based umbrella organisation that supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and the prevention of torture worldwide. Its members comprise more than 140 independent organisations in over 70 countries. It is the largest membership-based civil society organisation to work in the field of torture rehabilitation and prevention. IRCT is currently recruiting a Legal Advisor for its Legal and Advocacy Team. 
The position
The position is a permanent one, starting 1 August 2013. The position is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Key responsibilities
Influencing policy
• Developing input to relevant policies on international human rights standards relevant to IRCT membership.
• Development of IRCT positions and approach to promote the right to rehabilitation as well as key thematic issues in collaboration with the other teams at the Secretariat and the Council members.
 
Capacity support
• Contribute to the development of regional and global advocacy strategies.
• Provide legal and advocacy advise to individual member centres.
• Contribute to IRCT projects and capacity support activities in the field of legal standards and advocacy.
 
Knowledge and information sharing
Research, analysis, drafting of statements and reports on specific topics.
• Analysis of relevant legislation and case law.
• Analysis of national justice systems.
• Presentations at seminars and conferences as relevant.
 
Organisational issues
Support to the organisation of IRCT’s Governance meetings.
 
Knowledge and experience
At least 3 years of relevant work experience.
• Experience from working with human rights advocacy and/or legal reform.
• Experience in working in the anti-torture field or related field within human rights.
• Experience in policy development.
• Experience in working in a multi-disciplinary, cross cultural team, especially with health and legal professionals.
• Experience in managing projects and budgets of significant amounts.
• Knowledge of project planning processes and tools.

• Ability to think strategically and consider all relevant operational issues
• Interest in the organisation’s area of work

• Public speaking experience
• Fluency in written and spoken English
• Knowledge of Spanish is an advantage
 
Academic prerequisites
• University degree in law
 
Technology and software
• Knowledge and ability to use all relevant IT tools (i.e. Word, Excel)
• Efficient use of modern software and technology
 
Representation and travel
Some travelling is required.
 
Compensation
The Legal Advisor will be offered a competitive salary commensurate with the nature of the post.
