Master of Arts in Human Rights and Conflict Management – XIth edition
Pisa, January 2012 – Spring 2013
Introduction
The Master of Arts inHuman Rights and Conflict Management is designed to provide students from different cultures and backgrounds with a deep understanding of the linkages between human rights and conflict management theory and practice. The curriculum, strongly field oriented, prepares participants for working with NGOs, governments, aid agencies, the UN system, regional organisations and other institutions where a deep understanding of these issues is critical.

Description
The Master is a one-year post-graduate programme for which attendance is compulsory. It starts on 14 January 2013 and runs until spring 2014. The syllabus of the Master Programme, in addition to individual studying and the preparation of a final written project (project work), will cover about 440 hours of classroom lectures and 480 hours of internship. Classroom lectures are from Monday to Friday and run from 14 January to 31 July 2013. Internship lasts three or more months starting from August/September 2013.

Teaching methodology
Teaching methodologies include lectures, seminars, group work and presentations, role-playing sessions and simulation techniques.

Programme Outline
Module I
International law, international human rights law, international humanitarian law, geopolitics, economic development, philosophy of HRs, theories and techniques of conflict management, career coaching, essentials of research & writing.
Module II
Human rights field operations, human rights II, international peace-keeping and peace-building operations, international humanitarian operations, international election observation missions, project management, conflict management II, personal security, stress management, first aid.
Internship
Min. 3 months internship with a renowned organization working in the area of human rights, conflict management, humanitarian assistance or development, either in the field or at headquarters.
Project work
Written dissertation related to the internship experience.

Who can apply
The Master is a competitive programme open to a maximum of 28 candidates. 14 places out of 28 are meant for non EU candidates. Candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
Have a three years (at least) university degree or equivalent, issued by a university institution or equivalent. Students expecting to graduate before 31 December 2012 are also eligible.
Understand, speak and write English at least at LEVEL C1, (CEFR for Languages, CoE). Knowledge of any other language and/or any voluntary, professional or training experience in the human rights field would be an asset.

Application Procedure
Applicants shall enter their application online at www.humanrights.sssup.it. They are strongly advised to fill in all mandatory fields including the one concerning their motivational profile.

Deadline
● Applications for admission by EU citizens shall be sent no later than 17 October 2012.
● The selection process of non-EU citizens will instead be held in two rounds. The application deadline of non-EU candidates for the first round of selection is set on 2 July 2012, while the application deadline for the second round is set on 17 September 2012. Non-EU applicants are strongly encouraged to apply in the first round as space in the class may be limited by the second round.

Scholarship and Financial Assistance
The Master Programme offers one scholarship, covering the full tuition fee, to be awarded to the most deserving applicant. Depending on financial availability, reduced tuition fee might be offered to citizens from non-OECD countries who are eligible for a study visa for Italy.

Master Direction & Faculty
Professor Andrea de Guttry is the Master’s Director and Dr. Barbara Nicoletti is the Coordinator. Lecturers and trainers are chosen among academics, diplomats, international organizations officers and NGOs activists thus offering a wealth of both academic and field expertise.

Assessment & Academic Credits
A maximum of 67 academic credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the Master Programme. Degrees are awarded to students who attain a minimum of 60 academic credits.

Tuition Fee & Facilities
The tuition fee for the full Programme is 7.250 euros, payable in two installments. It covers the following: attendance costs and participation to field trips, didactic material (in electronic format), tutorship, lunch (on class and exam days), access to all facilities of the Scuola (including library and computer rooms). It does not include accommodation costs in Pisa and during the internship, nor travel expenses.

Internship Description
HRW has been working for 12 years with the victims of Chad's exiled former President, Hissène Habré, to bring him to trial. Please visit http://www.hrw.org/en/habre-case (English), http://www.hrw.org/fr/affaire-habre (French) for more information.
The internship will primarily focus on liaising with HRW’s partners in Senegal and Chad, drafting advocacy letters and press releases, monitoring press and events and assisting with research. The intern will also assist with some administrative tasks related to the department’s work. The intern will be supervised by HRW’s Counsel.
Students are often able to arrange academic credit, as HRW internships often offer direct exposure to the workings of an international human rights organization, close supervision by the HRW staff, interaction with other international organizations and foreign and domestic government officials, and opportunities to attend lectures, trainings and special events relating to human rights. Students should check with their individual academic institutions for requirements.

Human Rights Watch
Human Rights Watch is an international human rights monitoring and advocacy organization known for its in-depth investigations, its incisive and timely reporting, its innovative and high-profile advocacy campaigns, and its success in changing the human rights-related policies and practices of influential governments and international institutions.

Qualifications
● The internship is open to law students, law graduates, and graduate students with expertise in international criminal law or international relations.
● Applicants should be well-organized, self-motivated and reliable, with a strong interest in human rights.
● Oral and written fluency in French and proficiency in English is required.

Duration

Two paid traineeships

SOS Children’s Villages International (SOS CVI) offers two full-time traineeship positions in Brussels, one focusing on policies and programmes in Europe (Trainee – Europe) and the second on EU external actions (Trainee – EU external). The trainees will report to the EU Representative.

Responsibilities, tasks and skill requirements for both traineeships
General tasks and responsibilities

● Assist in the advocacy and policy work of the EU Office;
● Provide support for the organisation of meetings, seminars and other events;
● Represent SOS CVI in external meetings in the EU institutions and NGO networks;
● Contribute to the monthly EU office update and other internal newsletters;

Skill requirements

Good knowledge and understanding of the EU financial framework in these fields is an asset.

Trainee - EU external: specific tasks and skill requirements
You will support the work of the EU office to advocate for the rights of children in EU external action and to engage in the post-2015 agenda (follow up to the Millennium Development Goals). In that regard, good knowledge of EU development policies is required. Understanding of the EU development aid financial framework is an asset.

The International Crisis Group is currently seeking a communications intern in Brussels to work for six months beginning in September 2012. The internship would suit a candidate with a recent graduate degree in journalism, media and/or communications. Knowledge of political science and international relations are an asset.

Responsibilities
● Draft media outputs such as press releases, commentary articles and newsletters;
● Media monitoring;
● Liaising with international and local media; organising press briefings;
● Providing assistance to the Communications Director and to the Senior Communications Officer;
● Maintaining the Crisis Group database of media contacts;

Requirements
● Excellent verbal and written command of English; proficiency in Spanish, German or Portuguese would be an added asset;

International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS)
Internship Programme
Hamburg, 2013

Each year the InternationalTribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) has approximately twentyinternships for young government officials or students of law, international relations, public relations, political science, library science and translation.

Objective
The programme is designed to give participants the opportunity to gain an understanding of the work and functions of the Tribunal and to enable the Tribunal and its members to benefit from the assistance of persons with relevant knowledge and skills in areas within the scope of activities of the Tribunal. Participants in the programme are expected to be able to contribute to the work of the Tribunal in fields such as the law of the sea, public international law (sometimes including issues of international human rights law), international organizations and international relations, political science, public information, publications and library science, and translation.

Structure of the Programme
The Tribunal’s Internship Programme is normally a full-time programme, although other arrangements are possible. Internships usually cover a period of three months, from January to March, April to June, July to September and October to December. In exceptional cases, individual internships may be extended. Under supervision, the intern carries out assignments for members of the Tribunal and the Registry.

Internships are offered in the following departments
● Legal Office: Interns are expected to carry out research on a variety of legal issues and prepare memoranda and reports for the Legal Office. Interns will be requested to conduct research on a specific topic and give an oral presentation to the Legal Office. They will work with the other interns serving at the Tribunal on the preparation of weekly press reviews.  
● Library: The Library provides research services to the Judges, Registry staff, interns, and external visitors using numerous online databases and maintaining a vast collection of books, loose leafs and journals on the law of the sea, public international law and maritime law.  Interns will assist with daily operations including but not limited to: database maintenance, assistance with research, document processing, records management, copy cataloguing, conducting bibliographic research for collection development, organizing UN Documents; collection maintenance (shelf reading, shelving, inventory).
● Linguistic Services: Since the working languages of the Tribunal are English and French, interns in Linguistic Services should have one of these languages as their mother tongue and an excellent knowledge of the other. The service has recently acquired TRADOS and therefore interns are expected to become involved with text alignment for the translation memory and the compilation of databases. Interns are also involved with document preparation, referencing and research and other related tasks as required.
● Press Office: Interns in the Press Office are involved in the daily tasks of the Press Office, drafting public relations material, compiling  press coverage reviews, assisting with the organisation of visits and events and putting together presentation material for Registry use.  

Eligibility Criteria
The following criteria are used to determine eligibility for the Internship Programme:
Applicants should:
● have completed at least three years of university studies;
normally be engaged in a degree-granting or postgraduate programme at the time of application and also during the internship;
normally not be more than 35 years of age;
have a good command of English and/or French; and
have an interest in international law, in particular international law of the sea, international affairs or international institutions and organizations.
In the selection of candidates due consideration will be given to geographical diversity and gender balance.

Application Procedure
Persons who are interested in participating in the internship programme at the Tribunal in Hamburg should submit a duly completed application form, ITLOS/INT.2. In the case of persons nominated by a government, university, other institution, law firm or organization, Part II of the form should be filled out by the relevant official of the nominating body. A résumé, with grade transcript or list of courses taken and, if available, a brief sample of research work in English or French, should accompany the application form. Applications should be sent to the Tribunal to meet the deadlines below.

Internship period
January to March: application to be submitted by 30 September of previous year;
April to June: application to be submitted by 31 December of previous year;
July to September: application to be submitted by 31 March;
October to December: application to be submitted by 30 June;
Incomplete applications will not be considered. Please note that original documents should not be submitted to the Tribunal as applications are not returned.

Trust Fund for the Law of the Sea
A 'Trust Fund for the Law of the Sea' has been established in order to assist candidates from developing countries in participating in the Internship Programme and a limited amount of funding is available. In addition to the usual criteria for participation in the programme, the following criteria are used to determine eligibility for funding for the internship:
(a) applicants must be nationals of a developing country included in the OECD list and should normally be resident in that country; and
(b) applicants should be in need of financial assistance in order to help cover the travel and living costs associated with an internship in Hamburg.
Persons who are interested in applying for funding for the Tribunal's internship programme should submit this form, duly completed, together with the usual application form (ITLOS/INT.2) and a covering letter of no more than one page, which should explain why an internship at the Tribunal is important to the applicant and describe how it would fit in with the academic and career goals of the applicant and what benefits the applicant expects to gain from the programme.

Conditions of Internship
Interns are not paid. The cost of travel and accommodation, as well as living expenses, are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions, unless funding is awarded from the Trust Fund
Interns are responsible for obtaining the necessary visas and arranging their travel to and accommodation in Hamburg. An information sheet on temporary accommodation may be obtained from the Internship Coordinator. The Tribunal accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness during an internship. Interns must therefore show proof of valid regular as well as major medical insurance and provide a medical certificate stating that they are in good health. Interns must keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any reports or papers based on such information even after the completion of the internship, except with the explicit authorization of the Tribunal.

Certificate
Upon successful completion of the internship, interns receive a certificate. The certificate will, inter alia, state the period of internship, give examples of the allocated tasks and evaluate the intern's performance.

Platform for International Cooperation on Undocumented Migrants (PICUM)
Partially paid Internship

The Platform for International Cooperation on UndocumentedMigrants (PICUM), a non-governmental organization that aims to promote the respect for basic social rights of undocumented migrants in Europe, is looking for an intern.

PICUM
PICUM seeks to achieve this aim by providing its members and other interested parties with expertise, advice and support, by strengthening networking amongst organizations dealing with undocumented migrants in Europe, and by formulating recommendations for improving the legal and social position of these migrants, in accordance with national constitutions and international treaties.

Interns play an important role in the projects and on-going work of PICUM. They are offered an opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the different facets of promoting social and policy change in the area of human rights for undocumented migrants.

Tasks
For the period from September to December 2012, the intern will contribute to PICUM’s work in the following areas:
● Provide support for the organisation of PICUM’s workshops and events;
Assist the communications team in the coordination of volunteers, the production of PICUM’s newsletters and management of communication tools;
● Provide support to PICUM’s policy and advocacy activities, conduct background research, update institutional contact lists, analyse policy proposals and draft documents;
Database: regularly update the list of contacts and develop policy and media contacts;
Website: update information and provide support for the renovation of the website by inserting the translated parts;
● Update PICUM’s library and e-library by classifying and entering into the database various printed and electronic materials on undocumented migrants;
● Support the PICUM Director, and PICUM staff with general administrative tasks.

Profile
● University degree, Master’s Degree an asset;
● Some knowledge of and an interest in learning more about issues concerning undocumented migrants;
● Excellent level of English (oral and written proficiency). Working knowledge of Spanish and/or French is compulsory. Other EU languages are an asset;
● Able to work independently;
● Strong writing, computer, and telephone skills are preferred.

Timeframe
The internship is full time.

Terms
PICUM will provide the intern with an allowance of 314.4 €/month (1.257,57 € over the whole period of the internship). It will also reimburse local travel costs to the office in Brussels. Interested candidates with scholarships or funding are encouraged to apply as well. These candidates would not benefit from the allowance.
