The Summer School is a joint effort of the University of Barcelona and the Public Law Institute. The aim of the Summer School is to provide participants with knowledge of the current developments in the field of international migration. Migration will be examined by different disciplines including law, sociology and political sciences. The classes will be conducted by professors and professionals in the field of migration from different European Universities and organizations and they will be accompanied by practical exercises, debates and research work. The classes will be given in English. At the end of the Summer School, participants will be requested to write a memo and they will be rewarded with a certificate of participation.

Programmes and courses on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law
The Ius Gentium Conimbrigae or Human Rights Centre (IGC) at the University of Coimbra is the first university centre which provides education and research in the area of human rights in Portugal. It mainly aims at studying and understanding the contemporary international problems and those that historically are of interest to Portugal and other Portuguese-speaking states, peoples and communities and this from a multidisciplinary, but chiefly juridical perspective.
Besides its research and publication activities, the IGC is particularly active in the area of education through the regular organisation of the Post-Graduation Course on Human Rights, the Course on Peace Operations and Humanitarian Action, the Summer Course and the Autumn Conferences. The IGC offers education, technical support and consultancy, including opinions, studies, legislative drafting and independent external evaluation of projects and entities in the area of human rights and humanitarian law. The IGC´s partners and targets are public (ministries, schools, courts, etc.) and private entities (enterprises, associations, foundations, etc.), civilian and military entities, both national and foreign.
The IGC’ technical and teaching staff is composed of professors of the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, guest lecturers and professionals or experts with recognised scientific and professional merit in the teaching or research areas of the Institute.
The centre promotes the idea of working in partnership and, thus, privileges the establishment of cooperation protocols with similar national and foreign institutes, namely Portuguese-speaking, with other Universities, UN agencies and entities who work on the issues related to the scope of the IGC.

Postgraduate opportunities
The Irish Centre for Human Rights (ICHR) has the largest cadre of postgraduate human rights students of any single university in the world. Since 2000, there have been over 500 graduates from the LLM programmes, drawn from all over the world. The diversity of the group in terms of culture, nationality, age and experience contributes greatly to the dynamism of the programmes and the life of the Centre. We offer opportunities to undertake a postgraduate degree on a fulltime or part-time basis and our programmes are open to both law graduates and students with undergraduate degrees in disciplines other than law.
Students are taught by expert academics and practitioners, including both members of the Centre’s staff and invited experts, working in the fields of human rights, international humanitarian law and international criminal law. The Centre offers a wide variety of modules from which students can choose. Our modules combine both theoretical and practical discussions, allowing students to gain a holistic and comprehensive view of important issues.

Truth commissions - official, non-judicial inquiries into human rights violations - have become a centerpiece of processes of transition to democracy and peacebuilding, after violent conflict and dictatorship. International peacemakers, donors, human rights advocates, government officials are now routinely involved in truth commissions being created around the world, often as part of peace talks in the agenda of negotiations and final agreements.
The course will give practitioners directly involved in human rights, mediation, peacebuilding, rule of law, and transitional justice with the basic tools to assess the propriety of creating a truth commission in the aftermath of serious human rights violations and ensuring that the design and implementation of truth commissions are sensitive to contextual realities. The course will provide participants with the knowledge required to conceive, implement, and engage with truth commissions, in accordance with best practices and comparative experience.

International Criminal Court Summer School 2014

The annual International Criminal Court summer school at the Irish Centre for Human Rights is the premiere summer school specializing on the International Criminal Court. The summer school allows participants the opportunity to attend a series of intensive lectures over five days. The lectures are given by leading academics on the subject and by legal professionals working at the International Criminal Court. The summer school is attended by legal professionals, academics, postgraduate students and NGOs. Participants are provided with a detailed working knowledge of the establishment of the Court, its structures and operations, and the applicable law. Participants are also given the opportunity to network with the speakers throughout the week. Lectures also speak to related issues in international criminal law, including: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, the crime of aggression, universal jurisdiction, immunities, and the role of victims. The Centre is delighted to announce that this year there will be a lecture on Africa and the ICC.

The Human Rights Law Centre Summer School is a unique, expert-led programme aimed at people working in government, national human rights institutions, NGOs, international governmental organisation, legal professionals and academics, as well as interested students. The objective of this exciting programme is to consider issues concerning the rights of the child that are a matter of current legal, political and societal attention, both internationally and comparatively. These include violence against children, child participation, child poverty, children in conflict, and child rights monitoring and advocacy.
The Summer School will examine international and regional child rights law, including the work of the international courts and treaty monitoring bodies mandated to consider violations of the rights of the child.
