Poznań Human Rights Center and Adam Mickiewicz University are pleased to announce the 24th edition of the Summer Course on International Protection of Human Rights. This Summer Course has been organized since 1992. Meanwhile, it has become one of the most recognized human rights short-term courses held in Central and Eastern Europe. Up to present, the Course has educated more than 500 graduates acting actively in the domain of human rights.

The main purpose of the Course is to educate people in human rights at the academic level and help them to develop skills to act in the human rights field.

The Course is dedicated to activists in the field of human rights, NGO workers and volunteers, lawyers, researchers and advanced students from all over the world.

The Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies is a centre of Leiden University dedicated to research, teaching, and training in public international law. The International Justice (IJ) Program of Human Rights Watch (HRW) advises and operationalizes HRW’s activities on a range of issues relating to accountability in international criminal fora, devises strategies to obtain justice, and produces written materials to implement those strategies.

The IJ Program intern will primarily focus on monitoring international criminal law developments in targeted country situations and carrying out research on issues of international justice. Ideally, the intern would start mid-September and commit a minimum of three months, although six months is preferable.

Cinema and Human Rights and Advocacy (CHRA) is a training initiative offered by the Huston School of Film & Digital Media and the Irish Centre for Human Rights, part of the National University of Ireland, Galway and supported by the Open Society Foundations. This Summer School programme has for the last 9 years attracted young talented film makers and professionals from across the world who wish to engage in an exciting training course where ideas and projects are shared, developed and challenged by fellow participants and internationally acclaimed experts of film, television, photography and human rights.

The Summer School is led by Nick Danziger an internationally renowned practitioner in the field of human rights documentary making. The 10-day programme consists of eight teaching sessions, workshops and film screenings that combine human rights expertise and media studies. Sessions develop issues relating to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a History of Human Rights Cinema, Freedom of Expression and Censorship, the Use of Video in Human Rights Documentation and Advocacy, Producing Social Documentaries, the Role of Media in Period of Conflict and Production and Distribution of Human Rights Films. Each module is illustrated by film or documentary screenings.

Elements of the summer school include information on the fundamentals of human rights, how to raise awareness of human rights on camera, developing a project proposal and how these ideas should be pitched.

This Summer Course will deal in detail specifically and exclusively with the European System for the protection of human rights. Although there are numerous summer courses and other special study programmes within Europe on human rights protection, this course concentrates on an integrated treatment of the various European systems and of specific European issues of human rights protection, that is, with important matters relevant to over forty European countries with diverse political, economic and social systems. The subject matter, therefore, includes human rights protection under the regimes of the Council of Europe (the European Convention on Human Rights and the European Social Charter), the European Community, the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (Helsinki Accords), as well as that on the universal level of public international. The treatment of the substantive regimes and their specific rights catalogues will be set against the background of the philosophical, historical, political, economic and sociological aspects of human rights, and include practical institutional matters such as complaint procedures as well as developments such as in the area of ‘New Rights’.

New distance learning programme 'M.A. in Governance and Human Rights'

The professional M.A. Governance and Human Rights (Magihr) is starting in October 2015 and is run by the Leuphana University Lüneburg and the Humboldt-Viadrina Governance Platform

Magihr is a two-year distance learning programme with 3 classroom sessions for 2 weeks each in Berlin. Students will learn to apply governance mechanisms and use good governance tools to establish and protect human rights. The programme is hands-on and project-based. Students will develop and work on their individual project in governance and human rights.

Students will be taught and supervised by outstanding and renowned international human rights academics, practitioners and experienced project coaches. The programme is entirely taught in English.

There will be an online information session on 29 April 15:00 (GTC +2, MEST).

Routledge, the publisher of The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, has established an annual award to sponsor one student undertaking the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights  at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies each academic year, to mark The Round Table’s close connections with the Institute, and in particular to celebrate the achievements of Dr Peter Lyon, long-time editor of the journal and Reader in International Relations at the Institute. This award is worth £12.000.

In addition, the awardee will receive a 50% fee waiver, enabling them to use the studentship for maintenance costs. The total value of the award is therefore £18.750.

Please note that this award is available only to overseas rate-paying students.

Professor James Manor has been long associated with the Institute of Commonwealth Studies and had a pivotal role in founding the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. The Human Rights Consortium is honoured to be offering this bursary, which has been awarded since 2013-14, in recognition of his distinguished career.

Up to four bursaries, equal to 50% of the applicable tuition fee, will be available for students commencing study in October 2015 on the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. Part-time students are eligible for this award, although the award is not automatically granted for each year of study, and awardees will need to re-apply for the award prior to their second year. The same deadline will be applicable to part-time students applying for the award.

The purpose of this five-day International Disability Summer School is to equip participants with the insights and skills necessary to translate the generalities of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into tangible reform for persons with disabilities. 

The core focus this year will be on Human Rights and Disability-Inclusive Development. The participants will include persons with disabilities, their families, civil society groups of persons with disabilities as well as advocates for disability law reform, lawyers, policy makers, policy analysts and others.
