Internship on advocacy on Islamophobia as a specific form of discrimination

ENAR is a pan-European network of anti-racism NGOs combining Europe-wide advocacy for racial equality and the facilitation of cooperation among civil society anti-racist actors everywhere in Europe. This two-pronged approach makes ENAR a strong and effective advocate on racism and related discrimination in European capitals as well as in Brussels, while maintaining the link with the people directly affected by ethnic, racial and religious discrimination. ENAR knows and understands the situation on the ground and translates this understanding into concrete and successful policy proposals and initiatives. The organisation was set up in 1998 by grassroots activists on a mission to achieve legal changes at European level and make decisive progress towards racial equality in all EU Member States.

An internship at ENAR offers an opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the different aspects of working in an international NGO for equality. This specific internship (6 months between January-July 2016) is based on a professional immersion agreement (CIP) and thus remunerated in conformity with Belgian legal prescriptions.
The intern will support ENAR’s advocacy against Islamophobia as a specific form of discrimination. During this period, the intern will have the opportunity to assist the ENAR team, and in particular the Policy Officer and Director, in the following tasks:
• updating, researching and drafting policy documents, factsheets and position papers on Islamophobia, racism, equal treatment and other related issues
• monitoring and mapping policy developments within the European institutions
• ensuring the monitoring of impacts and results
• designing conferences and relevant meetings related to Islamophobia
• supporting the work on ENAR’s Shadow Reports on racism in Europe
• attending and reporting on internal and external meetings
• providing support within ENAR’s Forgotten Women project on discrimination against Muslim women, including research, communications and logistics
• participating in any other task related to the internship as deemed necessary and appropriate.

Required education and skills
• University degree in law, political science or human rights
• English proficiency with distinctive and proven writing skills (fluency in French is a distinct advantage)
• Strong drafting skills
• Diligence, accuracy and attention to detail
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to meet deadlines
• Ability to work independently
• Committed and flexible team-player, able to work in a multicultural environment
• Committed to the struggle against racism and the promotion of equal rights
• An understanding of the European decision making process
• An understanding of human rights, anti-racism, anti-discrimination, advocacy and campaigning

Time frame of the internship
The internship will cover 6 months between January-July 2016 and is fulltime (38 hours/week). Daily from 9 am to 5 pm, and to be carried out at the ENAR office in Brussels. Interns may occasionally be invited to participate in meetings on weekends.

Remuneration
This internship position is based on a professional immersion agreement (CIP) and can under Belgian law only be filled by persons who finished their studies and are unemployed. Applications from students will not be taken into consideration. Gross remuneration per month is € 1,000 + lunch vouchers.
