Drug Policy and Human Rights
14 - 23 July 2014
Deadline for application: 14 February 2014
The Central European University's Summer University (CEU SUN) is a programme in English for graduate students, junior or post-doctoral researchers and professionals. It offers high-level, research-oriented, interdisciplinary academic coursis as well as workshops on policy issues for professional development, taught by internationally renowed scholars and policy experts.
CEU SUN 2014 on 'Drug Policy and Human Rights' is organized in cooperation with the Global Drug Policy Program at the Open Society Foundations.
The course aims to explore the often tense intersection between drug policy and human rights. Taking place within the broader context of the UN drug control system, discussion will focus on the identification and understanding of relevant international human rights agreements and on the evaluation and assessment of the gap between rights and practice in the implementation of drug policies in many countries and regions. Including examination of both ‘consumer’ and ‘supply’ side issues, the focus of the course will be global and participants will be drawn from all regions internationally.
A mix of teaching modes will be used and faculty are encouraged to minimise the use of formal lectures. Emphasis will be on discussion and interactive learning with opportunity for sharing participant experiences. Time will be allocated for personal reading and participants will be encouraged to interact personally with faculty so as to deepen understanding of the issues. Site visits and discussions with civil society organisations and groups will be a feature of the programme of activities.
All those attending the course will be provided by CEU with a Certificate of Attendance.
For further academic information on the course, on eligibility criteria and funding options, please consult the CEU SUN website.
